Mile High Social, “a reality show in Denver following three ladies and their efforts to make the world a better place,” is set to release the first of its regular 7.5-minute episodes this Friday, April 19th. Hundreds of people packed the first — but certainly not last, and defintiely sold-out — DStill, “An American Craft Spirit & Cocktail Showcase,” at the McNichols building last night, drinking in the atmosphere…and drinking up some of this state’s most liquid assets. The event was a triumph for the Colorado Distillers Guild, which partnered with the Denver Bartenders Guild and Eat Denver to put on the event; it happened to coincide with the American Distilling Institute’s tenth anniversary Craft Spirit Conference in town this week.

The number of craft distilleries in Colorado has doubled over the past two years, to more than forty today. “I can only say I feel damn fortunate to be surrounded by amazing people, passionate about their craft and committed to putting out only the highest quality, small-batch distilled spirits that they are proud to put their names on,”
CDG president Rob Masters said in his greeting to DSTILL guests. “As our industry grows and life gets busy, we remind ourselves of the importance of coming together.”

A little-known fact is that Pope Francis has a couple of helping hands on social media: a pair of American undergraduate interns from Villanova University, a Catholic school in Pennsylvania.

Universities usually try to attract students with successful alumni, traditional advertisements, and in the case of elite schools, a positive track record. UTEC, the University of Engineering and Technology in Lima, Peru, decided to pull off a clever engineering stunt to attract a new class of techie do-gooder students: create a billboard on the Pan-American Highway that generates potable water out of thin air.

Morning Eats: Mmm...Coffee's Granola:

Every couple of weeks, I make a double or triple batch of granola. This toasty jumble of oats, flaked coconut, nuts, and dried fruit means that I almost never find a bowl that lives up to what I’ve got at home. That is, until yesterday.

On the recommendation of friends, I visited Mmm…Coffee with the sole goal of tasting their granola (pictured). The cafe, which is tucked into an alcove off of Santa Fe Drive, strictly adheres to the Paleo diet. I was intrigued but skeptical, given that granola’s base is usually oats, an ingredient that’s shunned by the regimen. But Mmm…Coffee’s version does more than make do, it improves upon the whole genre.

Owners Derek and Jami Fynboh toss together almond meal, shredded coconut, honey, coconut oil, vanilla, almonds, pecans, walnuts, sesame seeds, and pumpkin seeds. The final effect is a breakfast staple that tastes hearty and pure, rich and sweet. Because the combination is only lightly baked, it’s softer than normal granola, but the nuts still offer plenty of satisfying crunch.

The verdict: Paleo or otherwise, this is insanely good granola. I’m going back for more—and I’m going to see if I can duplicate the recipe in my own kitchen.

#RIP the hashtag. It had a good run, August 2007 – January 2013. At least it’s still alive and respected in every other country apart from France.

It’s a dark day for the Gallic Internet, as the French Government drive to preserve their language by altering the settled will of the online community. The hashtag will no longer be used in official communications or papers.The replacement term will be mot-dièse.

Really? I know the French are trying to preserve their language, but the hashtag is the wrong target. Not just because of the international nature of Twitter, but also the nature of how the hashtag was arrived at.

Much of the language of Twitter was built up by the first wave of users, with many ideas being tried by individuals, the good ones being picked up by their circle of friends, and the really good ones jumping out to be de facto standards – that were then baked back into the ecosystem as they were codifed by the Twitter developers.
